Akbash

The proud and independent Turkish guard

An ancient breed originally from Turkey, the Akbash is known for its proud stance, calm temperament and strong protective instinct. It has been used for centuries as a guard dog, especially for livestock, thanks to its natural guarding instinct and independent nature.

Origin

The Akbash breed has its roots in western Turkey and is probably thousands of years old, making it one of the oldest domestic dog breeds. The breed has been bred to protect livestock against predators and thieves, which has resulted in an independent and protective breed with strong watchdog qualities.

Size

The Akbash is a large dog breed, with males typically measuring between 71-86cm at the withers and weighing between 41-64kg. Bitches are slightly smaller, usually between 66-81 cm at the withers and weigh between 36-50 kg.

Appearance and coat

Akbash dogs are known for their white, short to medium coat, which originally helped them blend in with the sheep they were meant to protect. They have strong, muscular bodies and heavy legs, making them well suited for long days in the field. Their heads are large and broad with almond-shaped eyes that are usually dark brown to light brown.
