Origin
The Borzoin's history stretches all the way back to 17th century Russia, where the breed was a favorite among the nobility. These dogs were sought after for their ability to hunt, which was a highly valued skill within the aristocracy at this time. Borzoi dogs played a central role during the grandiose hunting expeditions held by Russian principalities, where they were used to hunt wolves, hares and foxes across Russia's vast steppes.
The breed was specifically developed to cope with Russia's unique and demanding environment. An important aspect of this was the breed's incredible speed. The name 'Borzoi' comes from the Russian word 'borzii', meaning 'fast'. This is incredibly fitting, as Borzoi dogs can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Their ability to run fast, as well as their sharp mind and ability to work independently, made them indispensable to the Russian princes.
After the Russian Revolution in the 1910s, the breed's popularity declined drastically in its homeland, and the number of Borzois declined sharply. Despite this, a number of dogs managed to be rescued and brought to other countries, where they have formed the basis of today's population of Borzois.
The Borzoi has today become a valued dog breed around the world, both as a family dog and as a show dog. With their graceful beauty, speed and intelligence, they have also shown success in various dog sports such as agility and obedience.
Traits and temperament
Borzois are known for their intelligence, independence and calm nature. They are loving and loyal to their families but can be reserved around strangers. Despite their hunting history, they are usually quiet at home and are known to be quite "cat-like" in their behavior.
Size
The Borzoi is one of the larger dog breeds, with an impressive size and an elegant posture. An adult male can reach a height of between 75 and 85 cm at the withers, while females are usually slightly smaller, between 68 and 78 cm. Weight can vary, but is generally between 34 and 48 kg for males and 27 to 41 kg for bitches. Their size and fast running style means they need plenty of room for exercise, so they do best in a home with access to a large, fenced yard.

Borzois have a thick double coat that sheds, especially during the spring and fall shedding periods. Regular brushing helps keep loose hair under control.
